Three forms (or 'allotropes') of pure carbon are
- diamond,
- graphite and
- buckminster fullerene (or 'buckyballs').
In all three allotropes the carbon atoms are joined by strong covalent bonds but in such different arrangements that the properties of the allotropes are very different.
