History is the study of the past. History is divided into different periods because of the following reasons:
1. The division of history helps us to understand the change or transition in all forms of living during one period and the other.
2. It helps us to know the characteristics of time.
3. History is divided into ancient, medieval, modern and colonial periods.
4. Ancient history dates back to the evolution of man and stone age era. This period of history makes us know the lifestyle of a prehistoric man who was basically nomads.
5. But the modern period details about the development in science, technology, culture and democracy etc.,
6. The historic period during which these modern features were not available is termed as Medieval period.
7. Colonial period refers to the period when India was under British rule, the slavery of Indians and their fight for freedom.
