Respiration is the biochemical process in which the cells of an organism obtain energy by combining oxygen and glucose, resulting in the release of carbon dioxide, water, and ATP (the currency of energy in cells).

Respiration is the process by which people (and other organisms) break down glucose (from sugars and carbohydrates in their food) in order to release energy.

Respiration is not the same thing as breathing. That is more properly called ventilation. Instead, respiration is a chemical process in which energy is released from food substances, such as glucose - a sugar. Aerobic respiration needs oxygen to work.
