The iron object is kept in damp air it gets covered with a red brown flaky substance called rust. This is called rusting of iron. The rusting of iron is a slow continuous process which makes the object useless.

The process of rusting can be represented by the following equation:

<v:stroke endarrow="block">             Iron (Fe) + Oxygen (O2, from the air) + water (H2O)        rust (iron oxide Fe2O3)</v:stroke>
