Fibres are converted to yarn by the process of spinning. In this process, fibres from a mass of cotton (wool or silk, etc.) are drawn out and twisted to form long and twisted thread called yarn.
Three types of devices are used for making yarn from fibres – hand spindle, spinning wheel and spinning machine.
A simple device used for spinning cotton and making yarn is hand spindle, called takli in Hindi. Spinning wheel (charkha in Hindi) is also used for spinning cotton. Spinning of yarn on a large scale is done by using spinning machines in mills.
