■Subsidiary alliance: When the Indian king was not allowed to keep the army for his safety instead the EIC gave the protection to the rulers. In return the rulers had to give "subsidiary forces" to the company and the rulers who failed to give it, had to give a part of their territory to the company. ■EXAMPLE: Nawab of Awadh etc
