The main cause was was the non participation of the western educated Indians who regarded British a nessecity for India's modernusation. The British had support if strong government of England, they had superior military techniques and able generals, whereas the Indian military techniques were outdated and the rebels lacked experience and coordination.

People of india was not having equality hindu wanted nana saheb to become natural leader and muslim wanted bahadur shah zahar 2 . Many zamindars and landlord and kingdoms like nizams , etc were supporting British so many people did not took part in this revolt
