In our daily life we use a variety of methods to measure length like a hand-span, forearm-length or foot-step but these are not the same for all the persons. It varies from person to person. Thus, these are not the standard units of length. The length of foot, fist and width of finger were used in ancient times. For measurement we require a standard unit of measurement which does not change from person to person or place to place. For example – a standard unit of length is metre. It is necessary to have standard units of measurements for the sake of uniformity in measurements.
