Silicon Valley was named for the silicon of computer chips during the initial computer boom. IBM, Intel, Hewlett Packard all manufactured here. Part of why manufacturing moved offshore was that when the leaking underground tanks and worker illnesses came to light, it was easier to relocate the plants than make things right here.
