Pulses are a kind of leguminous plants. These plants occur in symbiotic relationship with Rhizobia which form root nodules. Atmospheric nitrogen fixation occurs in these root nodules which result in increasing the fertility of soil by adding nitrogen to the soil. So, such plants are grown on fields in between other plants to restore fertility of soil.
