Clouds can charge tall buildings and trees by induction. The buildings and trees thus acquire the opposite charge. If the build up of charge is very heavy, easily flow from cloud to tree or building. Small wooden, vinyl, or metal sheds offer little or no protection from lightning and should be avoided during thunderstorms. There are three main ways lightning enters homes and buildings: a direct strike, through wires or pipes that extend outside the structure and into the ground. As a result, a very heavy charge passes through the air in short time because of the electric discharge and huge amount of energy releases in the form of heat, light and sound. This process is called lightning. When lightning strikes a building or tree, it catches fire because of the huge amount of energy released.
