An ion is an atom or group of atoms where the number of electrons is not equal to the number of protons. ... This type of ion is called an anion. When an atom loses electrons, this results in a positive charge. A positively charged ion is called a cation. Let's explore several ion examples of both types. An ion is defined as an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more of its valence electrons, giving it a net positive or negative electrical charge. In other words, there is an imbalance in the number of protons (positively charged particles) and electrons (negatively charged particles) in a chemical species.
