A lump of cotton has air trapped in it, in the spaces between the cotton wool. When water is poured on it or a lump of cotton is dipped in water, the air so trapped gets displaced appears in the form of bubbles.The result is that no air space is left between the cotton wool. In this way, the size of the lump decreases so that it shrinks.
