THE HAPPENINGS OF 1922-1929

  1. Mahatma Gandhi cancelled the Non-Cooperation movement suddenly in February 1922 when a crowd of peasants set fire to a police station in Chauri Chaura. The peasants were stimulated to do this because the police had fired on their peaceful demonstration.
  2. Gandhiji’s followers emphasised that the Congress must undertake improvement work in the rural areas. Other leaders such as Chitta Ranjan Das and Motilal Nehru wanted the party to fight the elections and enter them in order to influence government policies.
  3. Through their sincere social work in the mid-1920s, the Gandhians made it successful to launch the Civil Disobedience movement in 1930.
  4. The formation of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Communist Party of India were the two important developments in the 1920s.
  5. The revolutionary nationalist Bhagat Singh too was active in this period.
  6. The Congress resolved to fight for Purna Swaraj (complete independence) in 1929 under the presidentship of Jawaharlal Nehru. Consequently, ‘Independence Day’ was observed on 26 January 1930 all over the country.
