If first number is x, then second number is 40 - x
As per given condition
{tex}\begin{array}{l}\;\frac1x+\;\frac1{40\;-\;x}\;=\;\frac25\\\frac{40-x\;+\;x}{x(40\;-\;x)}=\;\frac25\\\frac{40}{40x-\;x^2}=\;\frac25\end{array}{/tex}
2(40x - x2) = 40 (5)
80x - 2x2 = 200
2x2 - 80x+ 200 = 0
x2 - 40x + 100 = 0
