The rajas of mahajanapadas build forts due to the following reasons:
For protection purposes - as people were afraid of attacks from other kings and needed protection.
To show wealth and power - Rulers wanted to show their wealth and power by building large, tall and impressive walls around their cities.
Control of population - The land and the people living inside the fortified area could be controlled more easily by the king.
Employment through labour: work as lakhs of bricks and stone had to be prepared for building walls and thousands of people were to be engaged for such projects.
