An object's change in position with respect to time is known as its displacement. Velocity can be thought of as the object's speed and direction, or change in position over time. The acceleration of an object is equal to the derivative of its velocity and describes the object's change in velocity over time.If an object moves relative to a reference frame—for example, if a professor moves to the right relative to a whiteboard, or a passenger moves toward the rear of an airplane—then the object's position changes. This change in position is known as displacement.
