The Janapadaswere the major realms republics or kingdoms of Vedic (Iron Age) India from about 1200 BC to the 6th century BC, which were then divided into the sixteen classical Mahajanapadas.
Mahājanapada literally "great realm" from maha, "great", and Janapada "foothold of a tribe", "country") refers to one of the sixteen kingdoms and oligarchic republics that existed in Ancient India from the sixth to fourth centuries BCE.
