Xerophytes: These plants grow in dry conditions where water is limited. In dry regions all plants not confined to the sides of streams or lakes are considered xerophytes whereas in the regions of high rainfall, xerophytes would likely be represented only by some shallow-rooted plants in light sandy soils, by the vegetation on dry hill-tops and the cryptogamic flora of lichens, algae and mosses.
