There are many hormones other than *** hormones like growth hormone, thyroxine, insulin and adrenaline. The important endocrine glands and their functions are:

1. Pituitary gland: Pituitary gland is attached to the base of the brain and secretes a number of hormones. One of the hormones secreted by pituitary gland is growth hormone. A person having the deficiency of growth hormone in childhood remains very short or becomes dwarf. A person having too much growth hormone becomes very tall or a giant. Pituitary gland is called the master gland of the body because it controls the functioning of other endocrine glands.
2. Thyroid gland: Thyroid is a large endocrine gland in the neck. It is attached to the wind pipe and makes a hormone called thyroxine. Thyroxine controls the rate of metabolism of the body. The deficiency of thyroxine hormone causes a disease called goitre. The main symptom of goitre disease is that the neck of the person suffering from this disease appears swollen. People are advised to use iodised salt for cooking food to prevent goitre.
3. Pancreas: Pancreas is located just below the stomach. It secretes a hormone called insulin. The function of insulin is to lower the blood sugar level. Deficiency of insulin in the body causes a disease called diabetes.
4. Adrenal gland: There are two adrenal glands located on the top of the kidneys. The adrenal glands produces adrenaline hormone which prepares our body to function at maximum efficiency during emergency situations like anger, fear, danger, excitement, etc.

The adrenal glands also secrete hormone called aldosterone which maintains the correct salt balance in the blood.
