Calcutta Bombay and Madras rose in importance in 18th century as presidency cities they became the centre of British power in the different region of India at the same time cast of smaller cities declined due to a drop in the demand for what they produced old trading centres and ports could not survive when the flow of trade moved to new centres and Alia centre of regional power collapsed when local rulers were defeated by the British and Diu centres of Administration emerged this process is called as the de urbanization
