State three characteristics of the image formed by a plane mirror

The image formed by a plane mirror is always virtual (meaning that the light rays do not actually come from the image), upright, and of the same shape and size as the object it is reflecting. A virtual image is a copy of an object formed at the location from which the light rays appear to come.

The characteristics of an image formed in a plane mirror:

  • image formed is virtual ie image cannot be projected or focused on a screen
  • the distance of the image ‘behind’ the mirror is the same as the distance of the object in front of the mirror
  • the size of the image formed is the same as the size of the object
  • the image is laterally inverted i.e. left-right reversal of the orientation of the image
  • altitude/orientation is always upright.
