Doctrine of Lapse (History): A policy of expansion introduced by Lord Dalhousie, the British Governor General in India between 1848-56. According to this doctrine, any princely state or territory under the British East India Company would automatically be annexed if the ruler was either incompetent or had died without a direct descendent.
