Friction is the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other. There are several types of friction: static friction, sliding friction and rolling friction.
Sliding friction is less than static friction because static friction comes into play when the object is slided or moved over a surface by applying force. The applied force lessens the friction and object slides. Thus sliding friction is lesser than static friction.
