The Mathura refinery release chemicals like sulphur which rise into the atmosphere, mix with rain and oxygen and cause acid rain which corrodes the marble of Taj Mahal. This causes yellowing of Taj Mahal. That is why, the Mathura refinary has been closed. This sulphur dioxide reacts with water present in the atmosphere to form sulphuric acid. This sulphuric acid formed in the atmosphere reaches the earth surface through acid rain. This acid is posing a great threat to Taj Mahal as it destroys the marble quality and its colour.
