It is bicameral with two houses: the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) and the Lok Sabha (House of the People). The President has the power to summon and prorogue either House of Parliament or to dissolve Lok Sabha.

Traditionally there are three key functions accorded to the Union Parliament:

Legislative Function

To govern a country efficiently we need policies and laws.  The function of the legislative is to form policies and laws that will govern the nation.

Executive Function

Once the laws have been duly made and sanctioned, the duty of implementation falls on the executive body. The state governments and other relevant bodies are responsible for this function

Judiciary

Once the rules have been made and compensations for breaking them established, it becomes imperative that there is a body which monitors proper adherence to these rules. Judiciary ensures that those who do not follow the rules are duly punished.
