Aquatic animals have gills which enable them to use dissolved oxygen in water for breathing. Some sea-animals like dolphins and whales do not have gills. They have nostrils called blowholes which are located on the upper part of their head and helps in breathing. Dolphins and whales breathe in air through blowholes when they swim near the surface of water. They close their flaps after breathing and dive into the sea. They can stay in water for long without breathing.

The submerged plants have narrow and ribbon-like leaves which can bend in the flowing water of rivers and streams and hence do not obstruct the flow of water. In some submerged plants, the leaves are highly divided so that the water can easily pass through them.
