They can: 1) Take your mind of your current problems 2) Take you to an imaginery, pleasant place, and allow you to dream and think creatively. In other words, they can stimulate ideas. 3) A poem can express ideas with which you can empathise, or even enable you to see things in a new way. 4) A poem can be a companion when you're alone, in that the language "talks" to you like a companion. It can tell a story, or describe something. 5) Some pictures are informative. They can show you how to do something, make something, or get somewhere, and this would certainly prevent boredom if you were alone. On maybe you can just colour in the picture and hang it on the wall. That way, you've created something beautiful.
