Features of Bhakti Movement:
i.Believe in one God: The saints of Bhakti movement believe in one God. According to them Ram, Rahim, Krishna, Hari, Allah, etc. are the names of one God. God is all mighty, God is omnipresent omnipotent and omniscient. He is the creator and the destroyer of the world.
ii.Emphasising on leading a pure life: The Bhakti saints emphasised on leading a simple and pure life. According to them a man should earn his living by the sweat of his brow and always should be ready to help for the poor and the needy.
iii.Faith in Guru: The Bhakti saints had unflinching faith in Guru. According to
them Guru unites every separated soul with the lord. Guru shows his followers the Right path. He (God) acts as a mediator and bridge builder by means of which one reaches God.
iv.Opposed false rituals: The Bhakti saints opposed false rituals. They were not in favour of idol worship, fasting, visiting pilgrimages, bathing in sacred rivers, wearing ear-rings, grave and tomb worship, etc. They emphasised on the internal purity of the hearts, then the observance of these external symbols of religion.
v.Challenged the Supremacy of the Sanskrit: Bhakti saints preached their
message in local languages of the common people. They put forward their opinion that God can be worshipped in any language. His hymns can be composed and recited in any language. They also composed their scriptures in common language. By doing so they challenged the sanctity of the Sanskrit Ianguage which had become unintelligible to the common people.
vi.Opposed caste system: The Bhakti saint did not believe in caste system. They preached the message of equality and held that caste-based distinction are baseless. They made a vigorous campaign again this glaring evil and held the view that in the court of God only good actions of the man will be elvaluated not his caste.
vii.Tried to bridge gap between Hindu and Muslim: The teaching of Bhakti
saints acted as a bridge to fild the gulf between Hindu and Muslim. Through their teaching they explained both are the creation of one God and strongly strongly opposed those beliefs which create differences between them.
viii.Self-surrender to God: According to Sufi Saints, complete Surrender to God one of the highest means to attain salvation. They are of the view that every devotee should suppress his ego and devote himself to the worship of God through words and deeds.
