On 21st March and September 23rd direct rays of the sun fall on the equator. At this position, neither of the poles is tilted towards the sun. So the whole earth experiences equal days and equal nights. This position of the earth is called an equinox.

When in a day the days are equal two nights means that the days are also of 12 hours and the nights are also of 12 hours this is called Equinox and if not cleared yet you can see it in the geography book lesson number 3 or 2 I think
