The property of blanket is to maintain the inner temperature. It prevents the higher temperature to get in and lower temperature to get out.
Same as blanket, the atmosphere keeps the average temperature of the earth fairly constant during the day. The atmosphere also prevents the increase in temperature and slow down the escaoe of heat into outer space during the day and night respectively.
The atmosphere also prevents many fatal rays from the Sun.
