The Doctrine of Lapse was introduced by Lord Dalhousie. Under this system , if an Indian ruler did not have his own real son , he could not adopt the son of his relative without the sanction of the Governor - General. The Indian ruler of such states became helpless before the Company . In this way , the Company annexed Satara, Nagpur , Jhansi , Jaipur, Udaipur, Sambhal and Baghat.
