Three basic characteristics - pitch, loudness, quality are:- (1) Pitch - pitch is the shrillness of a sound. It helps in distinguishing a shrill sound from a grave or hoarse sound. (2) Loudness - loudness distinguishes a feeble sound from a loud sound of the same frequency. Loudness of sound depends on its amplitude. Loud sound is produced when the amplitude of sound produced by a vibrating body is large and similarly feeble sound is produced when the amplitude is small. Loudness of sound is expressed in decibel (db). (3) Quality - the quality of sound is also called tone. It enables us to distinguish between two sound of the same pitch and loudness produced by two different source.
