Ashvamedha yagna, as name suggests, is a horse sacrifice ritual. It was used by kings to prove their sovereign. A horse (with some guards of the king) was left to wander, if someone dared to catch the horse, then it's a challenge to the king, and the king had to defeat him and let the horse free again to roam. After the king gets satisfied that there is no one who can stand in front of me, he orders and the horse is used to take back to the king's palace and sacrificed. This was done by many kings in order to inscribe their name on the golden pages of history.
