इसकी कोशिकाएँ चपटी, एक-दूसरे से सटी होती हैं, जैसे-त्वचा की बाह्य सतह की कोशिकाएँ, रुधिर वाहिनियों की बाहरी सतह की कोशिकाएँ।
2. सरल घनाकार उपकला ऊतक:
इसकी कोशिकाएँ घनाकार तथा जीवद्रव्य कणिकामय होता है। जैसे-थायरॉइड ग्रन्थि तथा यकृत की कोशिकाएँ।
