Priests were placed in the first order in society and nobles in the second order. In the social process, the nobles enjoyed rights. The big landowners, the nobles, were the king's vassals, and the peasants were the landowners' vassals. The king was recognised by a nobleman as the senior who supported them with bread (seigneur/lord) and the kings would protect the vassals who would remain loyal to them in exchange. This was called vassalage. There was complete control over the land by the vassals. This control was the outcome of the Vassalage practice. The kings of France were linked to the people by ‘vassalage’.
