Let root 3 is a rational number √3 = p/q [ p and q are co-prime no. ] √3q = p Squaring on both sides (√3q)² = p² 3q² = p² - (1) p² is divisible by 3 p is also divisible by 3 p = 3c Putting the value of p in equation (1) 3q² = (3c)² 3q² = 6c² q² = 2c² q² is divisible by 3 q is also divisible by 3 p and q have common factor 2 So, there is a contradiction in our supposition Hence √3 is a irrational
