Dr. Ambedkar fought for the rights of the untouchables and dalits. He supported the movement regarding the entry of dalits into the temples, drawing water from public wells etc. He was the first law minister of free India.

Dr B. R. Ambedkar was the Chairman of the Drafting Committee. He believed that political democracy should be accompanied by economic and social democracy. He was of the opinion that giving the right to vote to each citizen would not necessarily lead to the removal of inequalities between the rich and the poor or between the people of the upper and lower castes. It is only when the people themselves work for eliminating inequalities existing in society that equality granted by the Constitution in the sphere of politics (equal voting rights) would be of any value.

Indias nuclear policy refutes the use of nuclear weapons and advocates 'no first use'. India developed nuclear weapons only to retaliate against a nuclear attack since she considers the non proliferation unfair and illogical. Pt. Nehru believed that nuclear power should be used for peaceful purposes and not for creating mass destruction.

There was a group of powerful experienced leaders within the Conress who exercised profound influence over major party decisions. They were known as syndicate. When Indira Gandhi was brought to power by the syndicate they thought that her naivete in political affairs would make her a puppet of their strings. However contrary to their expectations she resorted to external sources for any political advise. This created differences between the syndicate and indira gandhi resulting in a split of congress as congress (O) stands for original congress (R) stands for requisionists.
