Mikhail Gorbachev was the eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union, having been General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991. He believed that reforms were necessary to keep USSR at par with the West. He initiated policies to democratise and reform the Soviet Union.  The efforts of Gorbachev to give some degree of autonomy to people in the Soviet Union made people to demand more rights and freedom. The efforts of Gorbachev to give some degree of autonomy to people in the Soviet Union made people to demand more rights and freedom. They started protesting against their own governments and the communist regimes began to fall one after the other. THus, Gorbachev played an important role int eh disintegration of USSR.

In 1962,USSR installed missiles in Cuba with intention to convert it into russian base. America became aware of it and as a warning , ordered American warships to intercept Soviet ships moving to Cuba. The US was feared of developing nuclear weapons on part of the USSR to challenge supermacy of the US . The Cuban crisis divide the world into two power blocs to expand their own spheres of influence in the world.

 The objectives of the ASEAN Community are as described below :

  (i) To accelerate economic growth and through that social progress and cultural development.

  (ii) To promote regional peace and stability based on the rule of law and the principles of the United Nation’s Charter.

  (iii) Later on its objectives were broadened and thus in 2003, three pillars i.e., the ASEAN Security Community, the ASEAN Economic Community and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community were established. The objective of ASEAN Security Community is to uphold peace so that outstanding territorial disputes are not escalated into armed confrontations.
