The Soviet system was based on the critique of capitalism which declared that capitalism unavoidingly leads never-ending impoverishment and exploitation of the masses. It stressed that capitalism can never equate itself with mass production for the satisfaction of human needs. The Soviet system was based on the ideology of Socialism, Communism, Marxism and Leninism.
The Soviet system was largely pro-poor in orientation with social policies aimed at the welfare of the masses. The Soviet system was constituted after the Russian Revolution of 1917, based on equality and planned economy.

The factors responsible for the disintegration of the Soviet Union were :
- The most important factor for the fall of the Soviet Union was lack of proper leadership. There was no clear cut line between the party and government as there was one political party which was wielding power.
- Mikhail Gorbachev's policies of 'Perestroika and 'Glasnost' proved to be disastrous for the economic health of the USSR. Gorbachev thought that his policies would work in the direction of development of the economy but it resulted in hyperinflation. That led to discontent among the republics of USSR.
- Anti-communists forces of Soviet Union had the support of the USA and Western European countries. Gorbachev due to his liberal policies did not try to uproot these forces.
- No effort was ever made to create a socialist human being and a socialist culture.
- The rapid growth of Capitalist Countries created an illusion in the mind of socialist countries for capitalism.

The Jan Lokpal Bill, also known as the Citizen's Ombudsman Bill, was a bill drawn up by civil society activists in India seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal, an independent body to investigate corruption cases. The Jan Lokpal aimed to deter corruption, compensate citizen grievances, and protect whistle-blowers.
The prefix Jan (translation: citizens) signifies that these improvements include inputs provided by ordinary citizens through an activist-driven, non-governmental public consultation.

- Meaning of Cold War: It is a situation of the tense political atmosphere in which actual fighting does not take place. The two superpowers of the world, i.e., USA and USSR joined hands to defeat the common enemy (Germany) in the Second World War but the difference in ideology made them hostile to each other.
- Factors which led to the rise of the Cold War :
- Establishment of the two Power Blocs in the World: After World War II almost more than half of the countries of the world were divided into two different power blocs. One was the capitalist bloc led by USA and second was the communist bloc led by USSR. Both wanted to become more powerful than the other. Thus, the atmosphere of the Cold War continued.
- Emergence of Communist Governments: The East European countries like Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia came under the influence of the USSR. Communist governments were established in these countries and later in China (1949). This created fear among the West European countries including the USA and it gave birth to the Cold War.
- Suppression of Freedom Movements: The USA helped France in suppressing the freedom movement in Indo-China.
- Suspicion of the Neutral Countries: Many neutral countries like India, which had followed the policy of Non-Alignment as their foreign policy, wanted to maintain the cordial relations with all the countries including the Soviet Union and the USA and her associates.
- Race for Destructive Weapons: Despite a strong protest lodged against the development and use of nuclear weapons, their manufacturing and tests continued. It created a danger to world peace.
- Present Position: Until the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the Cold War appeared to be simmering between the two rival blocs. The cold war resulted in rising of the “Third World” comprising the non-aligned countries. The number of these countries has grown significantly over the years.

India had to face many challenges immediately after she got independence, which can be summed up as follows:
- Challenge to Shape a Nation: The first challenge was to shape a nation that was united, yet accommodative of the diversity in our society. India was a land of continental size and diversity. Its people spoke different languages and followed different culture and religions. Hence a great challenge arose to unity and integrate the country into one bond Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel took upon himself to integrate these states either wilfully or diplomatically to be completed into different stages.
- To Establish Democratic Setup: The Constitution had granted fundamental rights and extended right to vote to every citizen. India adopted Representative democracy based on the parliamentary form of government. The challenge was to develop democratic practices in accordance with the Constitution.
- To Ensure Development and Well Being of the Society: The Constitution had adopted the principle of equality and provided special protection to socially disadvantaged groups and religious and cultural communities. Indian polity made herself to achieve welfare goods with the environment of effective economic policies and eradication of poverty and unemployment.

The role of NAM became more pronounced after the disintegration of the USSR in 1991. The USA came out as the single superpower and thus, the world became unipolar. With the downfall of the socialist camp, the Cold War rivalry lessened.
To some extent, NAM proved to be effective in the later period. It has not lost its relevance and the emphasis has shifted from political issues to economic issues such as poverty alleviation, equity in justice, promotion of industrialization etc.
Non-Alignment Movement has shown its relevance after the cold war era as it is providing a stage to developing countries for trade and commerce. It is also working on the concept of mutual interest which is going to be helpful for NAM itself.

Congress' social policy is based upon the Gandhian principle of Sarvodaya—the lifting up of all sections of society—which involves the improvement of the lives of economically underprivileged and socially marginalised people. The party primarily endorses social democracy—seeking to balance individual liberty and social justice, welfare and secularism—asserting the right to be free from religious rule and teachings.[citation needed] Its constitution states democractic socialism to be its ideal.
