Provinces were ruled directly by British officials who were appointed by the Viceroy. Princely States were ruled by local, hereditary rulers, who acknowledged British sovereignty in return for local autonomy. Before independence, India was divided into 565 princely states. These indigenous princely states believed in independent governance, which was the biggest obstacle in building a strong India. Provinces were British territories directly administered by the colonial government of British India. Princely states were states with native rulers which had entered into treaty relations with the British.

Protectionism, policy of protecting domestic industries against foreign competition by means of tariffs, subsidies, import quotas, or other restrictions or handicaps placed on the imports of foreign competitors. Protectionism policies are formulated to give impetus to the domestic economy and entail the adoption of certain policies to drive growth and allow for domestic development. Some of the tried and tested measures include Imposing import tariffs to discourage imports. After independence in 1947, India spent decades trying to survive without international trade. This has also helped India to run a trade surplus - whereby it sells more than it buys - in goods and services with the US.

In some countries only one party is allowed to control and run the government. These are called one party system. For example, China has a single party—Communist Party. One-party system is not a good option because it is not a democratic option. In the countries having one party system, the liberty of the individual is lost because people are deprived of the right of electing representatives. There is one candidate in whose favour all the citizens have to
vote. It cannot be called as elections in real sense.
