Cotton textile industry is one of the major industries. The first cotton mill was set up in 1818 fort Gloster Kolkata. But it was unable to survive so the real development or successful cotton mill was established in 1854 Mumbai by khawasji dabar. Cotton textile industry has three sub factor . * Handloom * Powerloom *Mill sectors . Handloom - handloom sector is labour -intensive and provides employment to semi skilled workers.it requires small capital investment. Powerloom - powerloom sector introduces machines and becomes less labour intensive and the volume of production increase. Mill sectors - cotton textile mill sector is highly capital intensive and produces fine clothes in bulk. India,china,u.s.a,pakistan,uzbekistan,egypt produce more than half of the world's raw cotton.
