Dr. Sadao Hoki is the protagonist of the story and Hana’s husband. A skilled surgeon educated in America, Sadao is wholly responsible for saving the life of Tom, an American prisoner of war who washes up on the beach alongside Sadao and Hana’s isolated home on the Japanese coast. Sadao is an emotionally complex character who struggles to come to terms with his inexplicable impulse to save the life of an American, who is supposedly his enemy, and his staunch Japanese patriotism (which increasingly reads as outright nationalism and racial prejudice). Sadao’s arc is anti-epiphanic, ending with his deeply prejudiced thoughts about all the Americans he’s known throughout his lifetime. However, the story suggests that the reason he helped the prisoner of war—putting his and his household’s safety on the line in doing so—is because of the latent human impulse to be good and kind. Alongside his nationalism, Sadao is also a proponent of traditional Japanese gender roles, requiring his wife to be a meek, subservient housewife who tends to the servants and follows Sadao’s orders unflinchingly. Even though the couple met at college in America, Hana generally conforms to this role gladly and seems to value Japanese customs. Despite upholding strict gender roles—with Sadao often coming across as cold and domineering—the couple appears to genuinely and tenderly love one another, even if those feelings are largely unspoken. Many of the decisions Sadao makes about how to deal with Tom stem from Sadao wanting to alleviate his wife’s severe anxiety at housing the prisoner.

No. As poor have been only consoled, illusioned that they would be provided with these and that facilities etc by rich and others since early time and without caring their emotions and hopes it has not been fulfilled and thus they have achieved dissapointment only as a result. Also the same situation is here ..with Sahab-e-alam either the author haven't taken seriously his words but his words were hope and assumption that he would also get a chance to study in school. But when he came to know that author has failed to keep his promise Sahab-e-alam also left his thoughts about school as to get out from one more illusion .Thus it wouldn't hurt him at all.

When M. Hamel gave his last French lesson in the classroom, there was no commotion. There was pin-drop silence. He was politely and dedicatedly talking with the students. There was no strictness, looked solemn, serious and deeply grieved. Whenever he spoke, his throat choked. He felt as if his bodily parts were being pierced.

This comment of Franz shows a Frenchman's typical reaction to the imposition of learning German, the language of the conquerors. Being deprived of the learning of mother tongue would mean cutting off all bonds with the motherland. Teaching the pigeons to sing in German indicates how far the Germans would go in their attempts of linguistic chauvinism.

Answer : Dr Sadao treated the American prisoner of war because as a doctor, he was trained to save lives. He could not have let the injured soldier die even though he was his natural enemy ,as that would have been against his professional ethics.

The poet talks of the need for silence and quiet introspection and the value of calmness and quietude. He also speaks about creating a sense of shared understanding between men. By this there will be an end to all forms of conflicts. Keeping quiet will help us introspect, reflect and experience silence and peace.

Derry was a young boy who lived a miserable life since a bottle of acid fell on his face. This caused his face to deform. He avoided the company of others and remained lonely so that he would not be noticed by others. People treated him differently after his accident the either made fun of him or were scared. The whole situation made him a boy with bitter feelings for everyone. He believed that nobody loved him and his mother loved him because she was supposed to do. He believed he was unwanted and lost. He didn’t want sympathy that people gave him he just wanted to be treated as an ordinary kid.

Hamel had asked Franz to question him on “Participles.” So he feared scolding from his teacher. For a moment he thought of running away and spending the day out of doors. He wanted to enjoy the bright day, the chirping of the birds and the drill of the Prussian soldiers.

Mr. Hamel was deeply pained at the order from Berlin. It stated the ban of teaching French. He loved France and French language from the innermost core of his heart. He was overwhelmed with deep emotions and looked different on the day of his last lesson. He wore the ceremonial dress. He addressed all as his children. He lost his usual courage and leaned against the wall when the wrote ‘school is closed, you may go.’

What

Gaurav Seth 3 years, 11 months ago

When man appeared on this earth for the first time, he was a totally helpless creature. He was terribly afraid of the wild creatures around him.  Natural phenomena like lighting thunder, earthquakes, floods and drought used to frighten him to the bones.  He was at a loss to understand the appearance of solar and lunger ecliplise, falling meteors or comets in the sky.  Some of those who were accepted as wiser amongst the group invented the concept of religion and God.  The ignorant men got something to fall back upon, something to pray to for help in time of crisis, disease and death.  Religion then took several forms and shapes, good as well as bad.

As civilization advanced further and science started marking its appearance, some people started asking how and why things happened as they did.  They started calling for solid convincing explanations for all observable phenomena.  This new knowledge and old faiths came into clash with each other gave birth to opposing camps of science and religion.  The clash continues even today.

Science has come to dominate the world in the modern times.  It has made man jump forward with a leap, built up a glittering civilization and opened up innumerable avenues for the growth of knowledge.  Man has reached the moon.  He is exploring space.  Yet there is something essential that is lacking some vital element that is missing.  Science has ignored the ultimate purpose of life.  It looks at the facts alone.  It has cut off all relations from religion which has always helped in the development of humanity.

The recent advancements in the field of science and technology have further alienated man from religion.  We are at the threshold of a new era.  The scientific achievements have turned  distance into nothing.  These have enabled us to go round the globe within hours and carry on conversation over long distances between places as far away as New York and Moscow.  With the help of science man of situation. But along with all these have come vice, greed, selfishness, and depravity.  Machines have led to capitalism, exploitation, unemployment, evercrowding and slums.  The monster of science and technology has run amok.  It has become a danger to the finer values of life.

It is clear that humanity has fast withdrawn from God and Church.  Science has occupied the chaste citadel of pious religion.  This has resulted in a confusion in the mind of man.

Man certainly knows what is right and what is wrong. He knows the differences between virtue and vice.  Everybody has his beliefs, values and ideals.  We may not profess any religion but we cannot afford to be irreligious.

Whether we are conscious of it or not, most of us worship at the invisible altar of some unknown God, some ideal, personal or international and offer sacrifices to it.  Religion is a safety valve and it will continue ensuring some safe course for humanity.  Voltaire, a great French philosopher rightly remarked, “Even if God did not exist it would be necessary to invent Him.” Science without religion would be complete mess.

The discord between the scientist and the seer is very unfortunate.  They treat each other with suspicion.  Each feels that there is danger to his existence from the other.  Of late, however, there has been a realization that the energies of both these forces, instead of being contradicting and self-cancelling, be harnessed and channelized for the welfare of humanity.  If science and religion join hands, the world can certainly be transformed into a heaven of peace and prosperity.

Religion does not necessarily mean dogmatism, fanaticism or superstition, It only aims at providing a moral base to human life-style and actions.  Religion does come into clash with knowledge.  In fact, any knowledge devoid of morality is suicidal.  If true religion or morality is allowed to drive the ship of knowledge in the high seas of life, it would certainly become a boon and blessing.

The pictures of ‘Shakespeare’, ‘buildings with domes’, ‘world maps’ and beautiful valley represent honor, education, civility, beauty and vastness. While, the poverty stricken and neglected kids in the classroom are an embodiment of the lack: they lack beauty, proper education, development and freedom to explore the world. Even their future does not hold any promise. In fact, there are chances these pictures may tempt them to pursue wrong path in order to find ways to attain the things indicated by them.

Thus, the contrast is highlighted by juxtaposing the world as represented by the pictures and the reality of these kids confined in a “narrow street sealed in with a lead sky”, both made present in the same classroom.

The Champaran episode is considered to be the beginning of the Indian struggle for independence because, for the first time, farmers and peasants rose against the Britishers. The English landlords had owned most of the arable land in Champaran. The Indian tenants worked on the land. The chief commercial crop was indigo. The English planters compelled all sharecroppers to plant 15% of their holdings with indigo. They had to surrender the entire indigo harvest as rent to the landlords. Later, it was found that the Germany had already developed synthetic indigo. The British Landlords realised that the plantation of natural indigo was no more a profitable business for English landlords. So, they decided to free the Indian sharecroppers from the 15% contract. They were to pay compensation for this freedom. The peasants saw through the trick and fraud of the landlords. Therefore, they wanted their money back. The peasants had always been oppressed by their British landlords, but they lacked the courage to revolt. Now, under the leadership of Gandhiji, they became aware of their rights. Thousands of peasants demonstrated courageously. Soon, a commission of enquiry was set up and its findings forced the landlords to agree to refund the money to the peasants. The surrender of landlords declared the victory of the peasants and the victory of the Civil Disobedience in India.

Sam had gone to the Third Level of Grand Central Station from where, he arrived in Galesburg of 1894, an imaginary refuge from rushing lives of the modern world. In 1894, Galesburg was a peaceful city. It had forgotten the First World War, which was twenty years back and no chances of Second World War for another over forty years. It was a city of huge frame houses with wonderful lawns and big trees forming a sort of umbrella on the roads.

People had very leisurely life style and there were no competitions among them. They liked sitting in their lawns and enjoyirig together in each other's company. So every thing was well placed and well settled with complete mental peace. They had no tensions, stresses or embedded fears in their minds and thus no mental ailments. Sam, being a psychiatrist, would not find any patient there, that is why it was said that he certainly can't go back to his old business in Galesburg of 1894.
