Rani Mishra ??? 5 years, 10 months ago

During his boyhood the author was completely dependent on his grandmother. She was a part of his life . The turning point came in their friendship when they went to city . She could no longer accompany him to school as he went to school by bus . They shared the same room but she could not help him in his studies. She would ask him what the teachers had taught . She did not believe in things which were taught at school . She was distressed that there was no teaching about God and the scriptures. She felt offended that music was also being taught. She expressed her disapproval silently. After this she rarely talk to him. When he went to university he was given a room of his own. The common link of friendship was snapped. However thier feelings for each others did not change. They still loved each other deeply . She went to see off the author at railway station when he was going to abroad for higher studies. She showed no emotions but kissed his forehead silently. The author valued this as perhaps as the last sign of physical contact between them . When the author returned after five years , she received him at the railway station. She clasped him in her arms . In the evening she celebrated his homecoming by singing songs and beating an old drum.

In the short story 'The Portrait of a Lady' by Khushwant Singh, the narrator gives a vivid description of his grandfather in the portrait.

The grandfather's portrait hung above the mantelpiece in the drawing room. The grandfather wore a big turban and loose fitting clothes in the portrait. He had a long, white beard and looked at least a hundred years old. He did not look like he had ever been young or had a wife or  children. He looked as if he had always been a grandfather.

Grandmother was an old and short lady. Her face was covered with wrinkles. She always wears white dress and take beads of rosary in her hands. She was a polite and kind lady. She was a very religious woman. When narrator live with her in village. She always feed dogs with stale chapattis. But after coming in city she was unable to feed dogs with chapattis. Because in city there are no dogs.

But when narrator went to abroad for his further studies. She felt very sad. Now, she spent most of her time by spinning at the wheel and praying. She feed the sparrows in her spare time. When she feed the sparrows they sat on her head, hand etc. and start chapping like they are talking with her.

When the narrator came from the abroad. She felt happy and collect all the women of her neighborhood and start singing the homecoming of warriors. Due to overwork, she developed fever. She told her family members that her end was near. But the doctor said she would recover soon. She don't spend time with her family members, instead she continued praying; till she breathed her last.

The poetess Shirley Toulson while writing this poem travels down her memory lane. She becomes nostalgic. She is reminded of a time when her mother was young and she was a child. She remembers how her mother used to look at one of her old photograph, where she posed in the beach with her cousins Betty and Dolly with a smile. But then she realizes that her mother died twelve years ago and is no more with her. She gets upset by this. The photograph was like a ruthless fact for her as it invigorated the sense of loss in her. But when she accepts the truth of human life the photograph provides a sweet memory of her mother.

For Khushwant Singh's grandmother there was none other pastime or happy activity than that of feeding sparrows in the afternoon for half an hour. The sparrows could be seen perched on her legs, shoulders and on her head but were never shooed away by her.
