The title of "The Portrait of a Lady" is apt, as the lesson gives a pen-Portrait of the author's beloved grandma. A good Portrait not only brings out the physical features of a person but also reflects his/her spiritual and intellectual beauty. The author's grandma possesses charm, grace and dignity. The story begins with the description of the grandmother and ends with her death. Throughout the story, the entire focus is just the grandmother. Thus, the title of the story is absolutely justified.

There can be no set principles for a delicate matter like Marriage, which is more of an emotional matter. Ranga had returned from the city with certain pre-set notions, but all of them dissolved into nothing once he came face to face with beautiful and virtuous Ratna. Marriages are made in Heaven and are not bound to set rules.

The ending of the play 'Mother's Day' is justified as by the end the insensitive family realises the importance of the selfless mother. It is a great day for Mrs. Pearson who doesn't get the love and affection, that she deserves, from her family. In this sense, it is her day; a turning point in her life.

Their relationship changed when they moved to the city. The author was admitted to good English school and she went to the school by bus. Now grandmother couldn’t walk with author to the school like she used to be in the village and not she could not help the author with her lessons. In village grandmother used to teach lessons. In city both got different rooms to stay and now author has less time to spend with her grandmother. In this story city life actually changed their relationship.

The author's Grandmother is a lady who is very spiritual and is a lady not accustomed to the Modern Techniques, styles and way of life. She has a kind heart and is very kind to animals. She is very much accustomed to the Village Way of Life. She is the frequent visitor of the temple. Her view and perspective of music is that it is the monopoly of harlots.

The cardboard here refers to the photo graph of the author's mother along with her two girl cousins that was clicked by the uncle with a camera even before the author was born. Here the cardboard's lack of durability hints at the lack of impermanence of human life.

The story 'Ranga's Marriage' is set in a village Hosahalli, which was in the erstwhile Mysore state. In those days, there were very few people in Hosahalli who knew English. Like today, even during those days, English occupied a very prominent place in the hearts and the minds of people. The village accountant mustered enough courage to send his son, Ranga, to Bengaluru for higher studies. When Ranga returned home, it became almost a festive occassion for the entire village.
People had a lot of respect for Ranga because he knew English, which was a very precious commodity, but very few people in the village knew English. Even a simple word in English like 'change' was not heard of. When Rama Rao's son uses this word, even the narrator could not understand. He had to ask Ranga the meaning of the word. The author, in his narration, shows that he has a positive attitude towards English, but he also asserts that learning a foreign’ language or .knowing it need not affect our tradition and culture. This is evident by the emphasis on Ranga wearing the sacred thread and doing 'namaskars' to the elders.
