During the pre-war times, the narrator lived in some other city far away from home and she visited her mother only for a few days. During the first half of the war the narrator’s mother was always afraid that they might have to leave the place and lose all valuable belongings. The narrator lived in the city in a small rented room. Its windows were covered with blackout paper. She could not see the beauty of nature outside her room. The threat of death loomed large.
After the liberation, everything became normal again. Bread was getting to be a lighter colour. She could sleep in her bed without any fear of death. She could glance out of the window of her room each day. One day, she was eager to see all the possessions of her mother, which she knew were stored at number 46, Marconi Street. She went to that address. She felt disappointed when Mrs Dorling neither recognised her nor let her in. She asked her to come again someday. It was evident she wanted to put her off. She was eager to see, touch and remember her mother’s possessions. So, she had to take the trouble of visiting the place again.

The grandmother was used to the life of the village. She got up early in the morning. She woke up her grandson and got him ready for school. She was very much concerned about the education of the narrator. She accompanied him to his school. She sat in the temple reading the scriptures. She was friendly even to the village dogs and fed them regularly.

The city life and its culture didn’t suit her. She was a religious lady. She was quite conservative in thinking. The English school, English language and science were foreign to her. Actually, she didn’t like them. She was upset to know that they didn’t teach about God and the scriptures at the city-school. She hated music. She didn’t like music lessons being given at the new school. She felt lonely when he went up to University and then abroad for five years. But she had accepted her loneliness silently.

Ans. When the author got a room of his own in the city home, the old lady accepted her aloofness calmly. She worked on her spinning wheel all day long and recited her prayers. Only in the afternoon did she take a half-hour break to rest and to feed the birds.

The use of cardboard as a photo frame was common in old times. The photograph was taken when the poet's mother (at the age of twelve or so) went to a beach holiday with two of her cousins, Betty and Dolly. The captured picture serves as a preserved memory both for the mother as well as the poet.

 C. Goldfinch

The goldfinch’s movement is compared to that of the lizard because she was abrupt, sleek and alert. The same movements were observed when she arrived at the tree and moved to the thickness side of the branch to feed her young ones.

Elsa was Einstein's cousin who used to live in Berlin where her father had his business. She believed that one must learn just enough to pass exams. She observes that one does not have to know anything or understand what is being taught but just be able to repeat it in the exams. To learn to repeat things like a parrot and reproduce it in the exam hall. Elsa does not read anything other than what is prescribed in her school, she has no thirst for knowledge and will not study anything that is not required as per her coursework. She advised Einstein to do the same and just get his diploma because kids dumber than him would get it easily without putting in any effort.

Einstein got into an argument with his history teacher. He was extremely honest about what he thought about various study subjects. He told the history teacher point blank that he did not see any advantage in learning dates. If one needed to know, dates could always be found in books.

It was not just dates, but he found no advantage even in learning facts. He did not think learning facts was education at all. He felt it would be more important to know the reasons behind the facts, for example, why battles were fought. His history teacher sarcastically called his views as Einstein’s theory of education.

Einstein’s chief objection against learning history was that there was no point in learning dates arid facts. They could easily be looked up in the books. It would be more useful to learn the reasons behind the facts.

No, we don't think that Albert Einstein was impolite while answering a history teacher's question. He seems to be impolite because of being straightforward in expressing his opinion. He always addresses his teacher by saying 'sir'. In this way, he was in no way rude to him.

Einstein was never blithe (happy) while returning to his lodgings. this is because he lived in a poor house full of dirt and had to eat bad quality food. even the landlady used to beat her children badly and every Sunday his husband came drunken and beat her .. this created too much violence and disturbed him a lot.
