The story, “Lost Spring” describes the pitiable condition of poor children who have been forced to miss the joy of childhood due to the socio-economic condition that prevails in this man-made world. These children are denied the opportunity of schooling and forced into labour early in life.

Anees Jung (1964) was born in Rourkela and spent her childood and adolescence in Hyderabad . She received her education in Hyderabad and in the United States of America . She inherits the literary tradition from her parents who were both writers.

Vaidehi Nikaju 4 years, 4 months ago

"lost spring"describes two stories of stolen childhood.millions of children in india, instead of spending days in school and Play ground waste their childhood in rag picking or hazardous industries.childhood is the spring of life, but millions of unfortunate children like saheb and mukesh waste this spring either scrounging in the garbage dumps of simapuri or building glass bangles in the blast furnases of firozabad there childhood is lost of the demand of survival hence the title quit apt.

Naina Rastogi 4 years, 4 months ago

“Lost Spring’ is an extract from Anees Jung’s book, Lost Spring, Stories of Stolen Childhood. In this excerpt, Anees expresses her concern over the exploitation of children in hazardous jobs like bangle making and rag-picking. Abject poverty and thoughtless traditions, Anees argues, result in the loss of childlike innocence and much needed play and education. The result is back-breaking hard work, dismal working conditions and acceptance of poverty and exploitation as destiny. There is a dire need to provide these poverty- stricken people, particularly children, a life of dignity and opportunities to dare, dream and do.

Hamel was the teacher in faithful service for forty years. He wore his Sunday clothes in honor of his last French class. The old villagers were present on the last day at school. Hamel told Franz that the Prussians would find fault with the French for they do not know to read and write French.

1. The youth is a dynamo, an ocean, an inexhaustible reservoir of energy. But this energy cannot be kept caged in prison. Its basic nature is to flow, to express itself. The youth energy on the basis of the nature of its expression can be divided into four categories. 2. The vast majority of the youth today is with the establishment, whose formula of life is learn, earn, burn and enjoy. It means learn to operate the modern devices and employ them to earn the maximum amount of wealth to the point of burning the natural resources of the earth, as well as yourself out, and then enjoy your own funeral. This category of youth is intelligent, skilful and hardworking but it lacks insight and foresight. They are self-indulgent and any sense of moral code of conduct is alien to their nature. Neither are they able to see in depth, to find out whether there is a deeper meaning and purpose to their human life, nor have they the capacity to look beyond the tips of their nose to find out the consequences of their way and approach, where it is leading them to. They are the ends into themselves and enjoyment is the motto of their life. 3. The second category of youth in nature and approach is the same but as it is less privileged and less qualified and skilled; it has lesser opportunities for earning and enjoying. Such youth may be incited to be against the establishment. This opposition takes various forms. When it is well-organised and systemic it may take the form of political opposition and even go to the extent of expressing itself in unjust ways. When the opposition is not so intense and organised, it remains contended with giving verbal expression to its resentment periodically. The youth of the above two categories need to be shown the right path to positively channelise their energy

Mr. Hamel was a strict teacher. He often used to wear his special dress which is a green coat, frilled shirt, and a hat made up of silk fiber on special occasions like inspection and prize distribution day. It seems that he loves planting also. He had great feelings of patriotism which seems in his last lesson of the french language.

The title 'Lost Spring' is appropriate as the story talks about children like Saheb and Mukesh who instead of enjoying their precious childhood are indulged in rush for survival, also they have no other option. It would be a miracle if such child thinks of being different from others and choose suitable path which Mukesh did breaking the cycle in which they were bound. So the stories are based on stolen childhood of poor children. Thus 'Lost Spring' is truly appropriate where spring (season) symbolises childhood.

For adults, it was just a means of survival but for the children, a lot of excitement was associated with the same for they often found unexpected surprises such as ten rupees note our even a silver coin and hence garbage was wrapped in wonder for them.

Rag-picking is the only way for survival in Seemapuri. Garbage to them is gold. People here live in utter poverty. They are devoid of even the basic amenities of life. Health, education, sports etc. are not even in their dreams. Their poverty doesn’t allow them to live a hygienic and healthy life. They cannot even think of a good life and keep engaged in ragpicking or some type of menial jobs. Even small children work as ragpickers in the midst of danger of a number of diseases.

Saheb's full name was Saheb-E-Alam, which means the lord of the universe. Quite contrary to the meaning of his name, he does the menial job of rag picking and can't even have enough of two times meal.

Tec Om 4 years, 4 months ago

saheb-e-Alam is the real name of saheb his name is ironic because he was a ragpicker but according to his name he should be the lord of the whole universe.

But when Saheb again asked her that is her school built now , she was embarrassed because she just made a fake promise to him and was not going to build an original one.
