Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it: Crime has become an inseparable part of society. But it doesn't mean that we can allow them to impact our daily lives and create darkness even on the brightest days. Eliminating crime is a must and harsh punishments are one of the effective ways to reduce crime. It stands especially true for the people who commit crime just for fun. The concept of punishment is based on theories. The theory in which goal of punishment is to deter the future crime is known as utilitarian theoey. Deterrence is the objective of harh punishment as it creates an aversion for the possible results of criminal actions. It is justified only when the harm that the punishment prevents is more than punishment given to criminal. If it doesn't deter, it adds to the human suffering. Utilitarian theoey believes that punishment may or may not have deterrent effect. Retributive theory focuses on the past actions of criminal. The moral blame is assigned to criminal and his future conductor doesn't form a base for deciding punishment. In it punishment is must and justified as criminals have committed an immoral act and deserves harsh punishment. It basically follows the concept of an eye for an eye and a life for a life. The emphasis is on the moral connection between guilt and punishment. Criminals pay their debt in form of punishment. Also, it calls punishment as a form of satisfaction to the family members. Harsh punishments are advocated by Retributive theory as it is appropirate to punish a criminal as per nature of crime committed by him. And yes it reduces crime as no matter what some people don't learn lesson. If they are treated with sympathy, they take it as a weakness of sociaty. Q.1 On the basis of your reading of the above passage make notes on it using headings and sub-headings. Use Recognizable abbreviations wherever necessary. (4No.) Q.2 Write a summary of the passage in about 80 words using notes made and also suggest a suitable title. (4No.)

The Maharaja of Pratibandapuram was a brave, resolute, determined, courageous and a firm ruler of his state. When he was born, the astrologers had predicted his death with a tiger. But the baby had something miraculous quality in him. He was only of ten days, he challenged the prediction of the astrologers and asked them the manner of the death. They told that he was destined to be killed by a tiger some day.

The Crown Prince was brought up in English environment. He grew up a tall, sturdy, brave and strong man. He become the king of his state at the age of twenty. He was determined to fulfil his pledge. So he issued a proclamation not to kill the tigers except by himself. The lawbreakers would be taken to task and their properties would be confiscated. Being a man of firm determination and self-respect, he denied permission to the British officer to hunt a tiger. He had to pay a high price to retain his throne. In between ten years, he killed seventy tigers and his forests became extinct. Then he married a princess whose father had large forest cover full of tigers. There he killed twenty-nine tigers but the hundredth one fainted due to the shock of the bullet. His hunters came there and killed it. Thus he fulfilled his vow. In between he did not adhere to the welfare of his subjects. Thus it can be said that he was a brave, courageous king that lacked worldly wisdom.

The Last Lesson" by Alphonse Daudet subtly comments on the suffering of the people of France when the Prussians conquered them. The authority exercised by the Prussians was so extreme that they declared that French would no longer be taught in the schools of the two districts of Alsace and Lorraine. Little Franz was unaware that it was going to be the last French class that M. Hamel took. When he realized that it was going to be his last French lesson too, he wondered whether the Prussians would now try to teach the pigeons to coo in German! The statements reflects on the inability of the Prussians to understand the patriotic fervor of the French people. Moreover, it is almost impossible to detach a person form his/her mother tongue and force him/her to learn a foreign language. Little Franz was contemplating on this linguistic domination that the Prussians were trying to implement and he realized the futility of their effort.
