Franz started for school very late that morning .when he reached to school he was surprised.

usually , when school began , there was a great bustle , which could be hearted out in the street ,the opening and closing of desks , lessons repeated in unison  etc.,

but that day all that was still ! When he entered in the class he saw his teacher Mr. Hamel , he wore his beautiful green coat , frilled shirt and black silk cap that he never wore except on inspection and prize days .

the thing that surprised him the most was village people who were sitting quietly on the back benches that were always empty .

so , all these things looks unusual to Franz that he never noticed before .

"the last lesson" tells us about the significance of one's language in one's life and how important it is to safeguard it. The author Alphonso Daudet (1840-1897) was a French novelist and short story writer. "The Last Lesson" is set in the days of the France-Purssian war (1870-1871) in which France was defeated by purssia led by Bismarck. Purssia then consisted of what now are the nations of Germany, Poland and part of Austria. In this story the French district of Alsace and Lorraine have passed into Prussian hands. An order came from Berlin that only German language would be tought in the school of these two districts. The French language teacher M. Hammel gives his last lesson. Suddenly Franz and other realise how important one's language is.

Character sketch of dewan

Rahul Sharma 7 years, 10 months ago

The Maharaja of Pratibandapuram, Sir Jilani Jung Jung Bahadur, had many titles and sub-names. However, he was popular as the Tiger King. The chief astrologer foretold that his death would come from a tiger.

Crown Prince Jung Jung Bahadur grew taller and stronger each day. An English governess took care of him and he was tutored in English by an Englishman. When he was twenty he took the reign in his hands.

The Maharaja continued his campaign of tiger hunting with rare single-mindedness. Within ten years he killed seventy tigers. He wanted to marry a girl of a state which had a large tiger population so that he was able to kill 99 tigers in all.

The Tiger King could pay any price to maintain his kingdom. He also gave a bribe worth three lakh rupees to a high-ranking British official to retain his kingdom.

The Maharaja knew how to take work from his minions. He used the dewan to find out the suitable girl for his marriage. He could be short tempered and doubled the tax on the people. He also threatened the dewan that he would dismiss him from his service. Ironically, the King met his death by a wooden tiger. At last, the hundredth tiger took revenge upon him.
