“The Rattrap” brings up the idea that the latent spark of human goodness is inherent in each one of us and it can be stirred back through love, trust and understanding. No one is infallible and can succumb to temptation so one should think twice before judging, condemning and criticizing the sinner.

The peddler (hawker) was a vagabond (beggar /homeless) who sold rattraps with a little thievery on the side to make both ends meet. Had no worldly possession to call his own, not even a name.

It amused him to think of the world as a rattrap and all the material possessions as bait as the world, he felt was never kind to him. Moreover, he prided himself in the fact that he was out of it.

He takes shelter at a crofter’s cottage. The crofter welcomed him, gave him dinner, shared his pipe, played mjolis with him and also confided in him about his income of 30 kroners and showed him where he had put it.

Next morning, the Peddler steals the money and takes the back roads to keep away from people and gets lost in the jungle at night. While he wanders in the forest he realizes that he has also got caught in the rattrap and that the money was the bait.

Finally, he reaches Ramsjo Ironworks, where he takes shelter for the night. The blacksmith and his assistant ignore him but their master mistakes him to be an old acquaintance, Captain Von Stahl and invites him home. Though the Peddler does not correct the ironmaster, hoping to get some money out of him, he declines his invitation.

The ironmaster then sends his daughter who persuades him to come home with her for Christmas and assures him that he can leave anytime. To which he agrees but she notices his uncouth appearance and thinks that either he has stolen something or he has escaped from jail.

The Peddler is scrubbed, bathed, given a haircut, a shave and a suit of old clothes of the ironmaster. In the morning light, the iron master realizes his mistake that he is not the Captain. He wants to call the Sheriff. The peddler is agitated and breaks out that it was Ironmaster who had forced him to come to his place and also the world is rattrap and he too is sure to be caught in it. He offers to change the clothes The ironmaster is amused but orders him out. The compassionate Edla convinces her father to let him spend the Christmas day with them.

The Peddler spends the whole of Christmas Eve eating and sleeping. The next day at church, Edla and her father come to know that the Peddler is a thief who has stolen thirty kroners from the poor crofter. They rush back home fearing a theft at their place also. But back home, the peddler had already gone and had left a letter addressed to Edla, signed as Captain Von Stahl along with a rattrap as a gift from him. In the rattrap were the three ten kroner notes of the crofter.

It was February when the stranger arrived at the “Coach and Horses” inn in Iping. It was a time of biting cold with wind and snow. Not many people visited Iping in winters and hence, the inn business must have been low. To have a guest at that time of the year was something unheard of. Mrs Hall was very happy. Moreover, the stranger did no bargaining. He gave her two gold coins. However, he was a very rude character. He snubbed her many times and even destroyed some property of the inn. However, Mrs Hall kept her cool because every time she confronted him for the damage, he told her to bill him down. The money kept coming in and Mrs Hall didn’t want to lose the customer until it was holiday season again. Griffin’s behaviour was very unusual. He did not go to church. Some days he would be continuously busy in his work and on others, he would just pace up and down in his room. His temper was very unpredictable. Moreover, he rarely went abroad by daylight and had no communication with the outside world. However, he always kept himself covered whether it was cold or hot. Griffin would walk on the loneliest paths and among the shades of the trees. People often got scared when they met him walking down the street. Moreover, his appearance made him the talk of the town. Mrs Hall kept telling everybody that he was an `experimental investigator’. However, many also believed that he was a criminal trying to hide himself in bandages. Some thought that he was an anarchist. Then there were people like Fearenside who believed that he was a piebald.

Writing an article must answer all the questions the readers have in their minds about the topic. So it should be written in the following format:

1st paragraph: The general Introduction of the topic, background, why should you know about this topic etc., and if possible, the outline of important points of you will be covering in the article. The is done to give readers an idea what to expect in the article, like what questions will be answered for them.

2nd paragraph and onward: Define each point in each paragraph and try to complete the information about one point in one paragraph, when you move on to next, write about next point.

Second-Last paragraph: Write with absolute clarity the practical use and application of your information shared or topic discussed in the practical scenario, who it will help, and how it will help, what should be expected in near or far future from it.

Last paragraph: Conclude your article with the information that you’ve covered in all the paragraphs, one liner conclusion for each of the point and discuss where you see it going and finish off with the last line artistically formed, eliciting emotions, thoughts or ideas, giving a beautiful feeling, or hope or inspiration.

It should stay with the reader for at least a few minutes after having finished the reading, and that’s how it is done!

Ex:13 Liverpool Road, Islington, London N1 0RW 5th November 2010 Dear Paula, Oh, how I missed being with you during the holidays this year! Everything in London is so different from Spain that I don't know if I'll ever get used to living here. I'm so glad that my father's job at the Spanish Embassy will only last until June. Then we will come home, and you and I can spend the summer on the beach. (I hope you'll spend your holiday in Spain, as usual.) I've already made some very nice friends, but don't worry - no one could ever replace you as my best friend! After school, I sometimes go to my friend Fiona's house. She enjoys listening to the same music and watching the same clips that you and I like. In fact, Fiona and I have tickets for Bon Jovi's concert next month. I wish you were coming with us! Life is very different here. Would you believe that we have to wear a uniform to go to school? It's awful! A blue skirt and blazer, a white blouse and a ridiculous checked tie, not to mention a pair of horrible, long, white socks. Besides, there is nothing to do in the evening. All the shops close by 4.30 p. m. and pubs are only open till 11 p. m. That's all for now. I must start my homework for my English class tomorrow. The teacher wants us to write an informal letter to a friend and I don't even know where to begin! Please write soon and tell me all the news. I miss you. Love,

She was an escapist, she was living a life away from reality. Her character also suggests that like many of the teenager, she was also a hero worshipper. One could also say that she wasn't content of her life and wanted to improve her life standard, though she wasn't doing anything positive and practical to gain it.
